I recently spent a long holiday weekend in Portland, Oregon. It was my first time visiting and I had no idea there were so many cool things to do in Portland! It was a challenge to figure out exactly how I’d spend my four days in Oregon’s largest city.
Besides the unavoidable influence from the TV series Portlandia, a trip to Portland shot to the top of my list after reading a Washington Post article that named Portland the best food city in the country—one notch above my beloved San Francisco. How could this be? I had to see for myself.
Not only was the food scene incredible, but Portland is filled with colorful street art and surrounded by the most stunning nature scenes. The vibe in the city is completely relaxed and you can tell that creativity is not only accepted, but encouraged. And to top it all off, the locals are super friendly, which makes me fall in love with a city even quicker. Make small talk with me and let me pet your dog, and I’m sold.
I also want to comment on how easy it was traveling to and from Portland. The whole airport process could not have been smoother. I think it’s the simplest airport experience I’ve ever had in my life, actually. I stepped off my flight and within four minutes I was on the MAX Light Rail headed straight for my hotel downtown. The Portland airport also has really funky green carpet that has gathered a cult following of hipsters. The carpet’s pattern has been made into t-shirts, doormats and other random memorabilia. Totally irrelevant but I found it to be funny and “so Portland.”
If you like art, really pretty nature scenes, coffee, beer, or really good, affordable food, then consider a trip to Portland. And if you don’t like any of those things, I’m really concerned. I did my best to cover as much ground as I could during long weekend in Portland, so here are some of the highlights.
