The Singapore Katong neighborhood and Joo Chiat Road area ended up being one of my favorite parts of my Singapore experience. Staying at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong put me in the heart of this vibrant neighborhood and gave me a chance to learn more about how this area came to be what it is today.
Stay in the Heart of Singapore Katong and Joo Chiat, a neighborhood with a fascinating history
Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong is a particularly special place to stay in Singapore, as its location and design is a reflection of the local history and Peranakan culture. I was not at all familiar with Peranakan culture before visiting this hotel, so I’m sure someone reading this may also have the same questions I did. Peranakan refers to a descendant of a relationship between Indian or Chinese men with Malay or Indonesian women. There’s a lot more history to learn, and I highly recommend reading further on the topic, but that is a high-level summary of how this mix of cultures came to be. The culture is still alive and well in this area today and it’s fascinating to be able to experience some of it firsthand.
Checking-in to Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong
It was after dark when I pulled up to Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong. The exterior is simple in a way that doesn’t draw much attention to itself; so much so that from the street I may have completely missed it. My cab pulled into what seemed like a little side street or driveway off of the main road and I immediately spotted the hotel’s name printed alongside the most vibrant, green plant wall. The plant game in Singapore is like nothing I’ve ever seen. This city is so immaculately gardened and well manicured. I assume the weather has something to do with how impressively plants appear to thrive.
I entered the hotel and was greeted by a few friendly faces standing at the reception desk in front of a stunning backdrop. I was already in love with the creativity and artistic detail that I was seeing in this hotel. The air was cool and a welcome change from the extreme humidity outdoors. The lobby area was sleek, clean, and minimal, but so beautiful. The simplicity of the design immediately put me at ease and had me feeling relaxed before I was even handed my room key.
After drooling over the beautiful interior design downstairs, I was excited to check out my room. The elevator and the hallways were just as pleasing aesthetically, accented with vibrant portraits highlighting the local neighborhood and culture, leading me to one of the best hotel guest rooms I’ve ever stayed in.
The Guest Rooms at Hotel Indigo Katong Singapore
Yes, you heard that correctly—my room at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong is one of my favorite rooms that I’ve ever stayed in. Seriously, ever. I’m very picky when it comes to hotels. Not in a snobby I-need-to-be-pampered kind of way, but I’m very selective when choosing hotel properties because I really seek out a specific style and vibe. As a creative person, I draw inspiration from my surroundings. So I want to be in a space that is thoughtful, unique, balanced, and beautiful.
The room I stayed in is all of those things and more. First of all, let’s not waste any time here—we need to talk about the bathtub. If you haven’t focused on any of the photos in this post, take a quick look at them now and observe one of the most magical tubs you’ll ever lay your pretty little eyes on. When I found Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong online and started browsing the rooms, I was determined to get myself in that bathtub. I would not have it any other way.

Having just landed back in Singapore from a few busy, jam-packed days in Siem Reap, Cambodia, I couldn’t have been happier to come into this beautiful room and relax in a warm bath. And that view isn’t anything to complain about either. The floor-to-ceiling windows add an exclusive touch. In addition to the tub, I am clearly obsessed with, I was surprised to also find a huge shower tucked around the corner, also with a floor-to-ceiling window. (Don’t worry, there are shades to pull down on the entire wall of windows if you are concerned about privacy.)
My favorite parts, if I had to choose, are the tile-inspired floor design all over the bathroom and the linens on the bed. I love the pattern and bright colors of the pillows up against the crisp and clean white bedding. Speaking of the bed, it was incredible as
well. The mattress, the pillows, and the sheets made it extra difficult for me to get up and moving in the morning. Another standout detail is the mural on the wall behind the head of the bed. This design added a hip and modern artistic flair to the space.

View over Singapore Katong and Joo Chiat
Just when I thought my experience at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong couldn’t get any better, I discovered the pool. It’s not just any old hotel pool, this infinity pool lives on the rooftop of the hotel with a view as far as the eye can see over one of Singapore’s historic neighborhoods. Take my word for it—this pool is stunning.
I feel like Singapore has a reputation for being home to some really awesome pools. While some of the pools around Singapore are extremely hyped, the pool at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong seems to be a true hidden gem. Except here I am telling everyone about it, but that’s ok—it’s so amazing, I want others to experience it too! Like most travelers, I wanted to visit some of the amazing pools in Singapore, but I didn’t want to fork out hundreds of dollars per night for a swim in a nice pool. Luckily this property is not only affordable, but the pool experience was not overly crowded so I was really able to enjoy my time there.
And let me just say, you will definitely want access to a pool when you are in Singapore. I mean, sure, you could survive without it, but it’s so warm and humid in Singapore, you will love having a pool to cool off. And like I said, the pools here are amazing, so why not experience Singapore to the fullest and take advantage of the year-round warm weather?
Delicious Dining Downstairs at Baba Chews
There is so much good food to eat in Singapore. During my stay at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong I enjoyed breakfast at Baba Chews which is located on the same property as the hotel. Like the hotel, the restaurant’s interior design and menu are inspired by the local history and culture. The dining space was equally as beautiful as the hotel with more beautiful tile-inspired details, which I’m a huge fan of.
My meal was included in my room stay, leaving me extremely impressed with the selection of food that was available to me. In addition to an amazing buffet-style setting full of fresh fruit, juices, bread, pastries, and much more, I was also able to order off of an a la carte menu. I felt so spoiled dining at Baba Chews. They completely blew me away with their selection and it’s definitely one of the better meal offerings I’ve ever had included with a hotel stay.
