A Day Trip From Dubrovnik to Kravice Waterfalls: The Ultimate Guide

A day trip from Dubrovnik to Kravice Waterfalls in Bosnia-Herzegovina is one you will not regret. I stumbled across this incredible sight while doing research before my trip to Croatia. Once I laid my eyes on Kravice Waterfalls, I was determined to make my way there.

How to get to Kravice Waterfalls

Kravice Waterfalls is kind of in the middle of nowhere, in a town that you’d probably not necessarily be visiting otherwise. Luckily, the location is fairly easy to access from a few bigger cities that travelers are more likely to frequent.

How To Get to Kravice Waterfalls from Dubrovnik

Kravice Waterfalls is located 86 miles from Dubrovnik, making the trip about two and a half hours by car. From Dubrovnik, the best transportation options are to rent a car, hire a driver or join a tour. Before my trip, I read that Google maps do not work once you cross into Bosnia, so I was hesitant to rent a car as many travelers had reported getting lost.

We ended up hiring a driver for just a little more than the cost of renting a car. This option was well worth it, in my opinion, because our driver provided us with so much history and information along the way. If you are interested in booking a tour, click here to check pricing and availability.

Kravice Waterfalls From Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Kravice Waterfalls is 28 miles outside of Mostar and about a 45-minute to one-hour drive. Again, I read that travelers renting cars had a hard time finding Kravice without Google maps. Joining a tour or taking a taxi seems to be the most stress-free option for making the trip from Mostar.

Arriving at Kravice Waterfalls

If you arrive by car, you will see there are two parking lots at the entrance for you to choose from. Once you park, there will be an open dirt space at the entrance with a short, wooden fence on your right hand side. Walk to the fence and take a look over — you will see Kravice Waterfalls down below.

Facing the entrance again, you will see a cafe located on your left hand side. This is a good spot to grab a cold drink before or after your journey down to the waterfall. The waterfall is located down the hill, so you will need to walk or take the small train.

When you’re ready to enter, approach the wooden booth at the entry gate. You will pay a small fee to get in. The cost was minimal—4 KM, which is equivalent to $2.29 (USD) at the time of this writing. If you need to use the restroom, there are toilets located right past the entry booth.

Note: At the entrance, they would not accept our euros or Croatian Kuna. The currency here is the Bosnia and Herzegovina Convertible Mark. We only had kuna since we came straight from Croatia. They let us in, allowed us to get change at the restaurants below by the waterfall and pay when we exited. I’m not sure why the restaurants below accept foreign currency but the front gate wouldn’t—come prepared for this.

Entering Kravice Waterfalls

As I mentioned, you need to walk down the hill to get to Kravice Waterfalls. There is a small train that is available to transfer visitors down the hill, but it arrives infrequently so we didn’t bother.

The walk down is easy, albeit a little crowded if you happen to arrive at the same time as a tour bus. We were visiting on September 1 and it was incredibly hot. So while the walk down is cake, the walk back up is rough in the heat.

Follow the downhill mix of dirt paths and stone-paved steps for about 15 minutes and you will reach the waterfalls. As soon as you start to descend upon the lake, you will spot beach areas below and begin to feel a mild relief from the heat. The mist from the waterfall fills the air and creates a welcomed cooling sensation. Be careful as you complete the last portion of the downhill walk, the mist also makes the ground incredibly slippery.

When you reach the bottom, you land right next to one of the lakeside restaurants. If you keep walking straight past the restaurant, there will be a pop-up changing stall with curtains if you want to get into your swimwear.

Continue on and you will see a narrow bridge that will lead you over the water. Head over the bridge and you will find a collection of cafes with scattered seating. There is one in particular that we chose to make our home base because it had the best-unobstructed waterfall views, but all of the cafes appeared to be offering the same menu.

The Experience at Kravice Waterfalls

Once we finally made our way to a seat in front of Kravice Waterfalls, we got comfortable at our cafe table, enjoyed a Bosnian beer, and ate the food that we had picked up at a bakery on the way in. This place was a lot crazier than I expected—people everywhere, nothing was really organized—but none of that mattered much because the scenery was so amazing.

TIP: As I just mentioned, you can bring your own food in. This is the perfect place for a picnic—come prepared with treats!

Kravice Waterfalls serves as a main summer cool-off spot for locals in this part of the country. There are small beach areas around the lake if you want to bring a towel and lounge. Being over two hours from the coast, it makes sense that so many people flock here on a hot day. The crowd was a good combination of locals and tourists of all ages.

Swimming at Kravice Waterfalls

Getting in the water at Kravice Waterfalls is definitely an option, if that’s something you’re wondering. Many people were swimming in the lake and climbing on the rocks under the waterfall. I personally did not go all the way in, but my boyfriend did and he had a blast. The water was surprisingly chilly considering how hot it was outside, but that appeared to make it all the more enjoyable for swimmers.

I spent most of my time sitting on the side of the lake admiring the picture-perfect scene. This was honestly one of the most incredible, jaw-dropping, beautiful natural wonders that I’ve ever laid my eyes on in person. I don’t know how else to put it into words, so I’ll let the pictures speak for me—even though it’s hard for pictures to completely do this place justice.

I really want to emphasize how incredible this experience was. Kravice Waterfalls is a natural wonder that any human with a heartbeat would appreciate. If you are traveling anywhere in Croatia or Bosnia & Herzegovina, I urge you to try and find time to visit Kravice Waterfalls—you will not regret it!
